Bad Reputation -Man allegedly tries to kill friend

Nickail Chambers being escorted from the Magistrate’s Court

While stating that Nickail Chambers has one of the worst rap sheets she has ever seen, Senior Magistrate Tamia Richards yesterday denied bail to the 25-year-old who is accused of trying to murder his childhood friend Cory Prince.

Chambers, who appeared before the Magistrate’s Court on charges of attempted murder and possession of firearm with intent to endanger, is a native of Jamaica with citizenship here in the British Virgin Islands (BVI)

The prosecution alleged that, on June 22 this year, Chambers and Prince were having a conversation in the Belle Vue area of Tortola. They had been friends since primary school.

Prince’s hand made contact with Chambers’ hand during the conversation, and Chambers allegedly started to punch Prince.

It is further alleged that the accused man then held Prince in a headlock, causing others to intervene.

Residents restrained the feuding men, the court heard.

The court was told further that Chambers, who managed to free himself, proceeded to attack Prince.

Prince reportedly punched him.

Prince left the area and went to his workplace at Core’s Scooter Sales in Fort Hill, Tortola.

Chambers reportedly was spotted riding past the business-place some time later.

Allegations are that he subsequently returned to the establishment with a firearm on the day in question.

Chambers reportedly stood across the road from the business-place, pulled out a gun, and discharged several rounds at Prince.

Prince fled the scene. The court heard that he ran through bushes and down a mountain in fear for his life.

The matter was reported to the police, who visited the scene and conducted investigations.

Law enforcers retrieved CCTV footage from Prince’s work-place. The prosecution told the court that Chambers was clearly observed as the gunman.

The accused turned himself in to police on Monday, July 10. The court heard that he responded ‘no comment’ to many pertinent questions posed during a police interview.

Chambers, who is being represented by attorney-at-law Stephen Daniels, was then charged.

Poorest record

Meanwhile, in court, the prosecution objected to bail.

It claimed that Chambers has been before the court for various offences – burglary, rape, possession of an offensive weapon, possession of a controlled drug, common assault, and handling stolen goods.

Senior Magistrate Richards then ordered that the Lower Estate resident be remanded.

“The record of this defendant is one of the poorest I’ve ever seen,” the senior magistrate said.

Chambers is scheduled to return to court on September 29.
