A boat captain died suddenly on Virgin Gorda on New Year’s Day, prompting a police investigation into the circumstances of the death.

The deceased is 48 year-old North Sound resident Leslie Shortte, otherwise known as Shabba.

He is a native of St Vincent and the Grenadines who has been living on Virgin Gorda for several years.

Reports are that Shortte was at home when he complained about feeling ill and started to vomit what appeared to be blood.

He was taken to the Nurse Iris O’Neal Clinic in what is said to have been critical condition.

Shortte eventually died.

His passing brought to two, the number of reported sudden deaths recorded in the British Virgin Islands on the first day of 2017.

On the island of Tortola, prominent businessman and former chairman of the BVI Tourist Board Neil Blyden also passed away suddenly after feeling unwell.
