Curfew relaxed further
Governor of the British Virgin Islands, Augustus Jaspert, has ordered for the ongoing curfew to be further relaxed.
Starting tomorrow, October 21, the new curfew will run from 11pm to 6am daily.
This gives residents an additional hour to traverse the territory’s streets without restrictions. The present curfew, which will no longer apply after today, runs from 10pm to 6am.
Governor Jaspert said the new 11pm curfew will not apply to persons employed in the essential services, if they are on duty; officers of private security service providers, if they are on duty; and Customs and Immigration officers, if they are on duty.
Governor Jaspert made the order yesterday in accordance with the new Curfew Act which was implemented on October 5.
That law was implemented in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma which saw widespread looting across the territory.
It effectively allows for a curfew to be implemented without the Governor first declaring a state of emergency.
Persons who breach a curfew without lawful excuse are liable to serve time in prison, pay a fine, or both.
