Deputy Governor David Archer, Jr has been appointed the Acting Governor.
Archer’s appointment took effect last Thursday, May 17.
He is acting in the position until May 26 while Governor Augustus Jaspert is out of the territory.
According to Section 37 of the Virgin Islands Constitution: “During any period when the office of Governor is vacant, or the Governor is absent from the Virgin Islands or is for any other reason unable to perform the functions of his or her office, the Deputy Governor shall, during Her Majesty’s pleasure, act in the office of Governor and shall perform the functions of that office accordingly.”
Meanwhile, Governor Jaspert’s absence comes amid the much talked about Decision March slated for tomorrow, May 24.
The march is being held to protest the UK parliament’s recent order to impose public registers of beneficial ownership on the BVI and other British Overseas Territories.
The march will begin at the Sunday Morning Well in Road Town, into Fleming Street and Waterfront Drive, then culminate at Government House, where the Governor resides.
