While encouraging more businesses to contribute towards the development of the education system, Minister for Education Myron Walwyn said a number of private and public schools will benefit from financial contributions that have been provided by Delta Petroleum Caribbean Limited.

He received cheques totaling $8,100 from the company’s Regional Chief Accountant, Andrew Vasconcellos.

The money will go towards assisting public schools, as well as four private ones – Seventh Day Adventist Primary and Secondary, Cedar International, and Pelican Gate Primary.

“I am grateful to Delta for taking the initiative to contribute to the education system in the territory. I have said before that the Government of the Virgin Islands cannot do it all, and we rely on the business community to assist in the development of our schools and our youth,” Walwyn said.

Delta’s representative, Vasconcellos, commented: “Delta Petroleum has a responsibility to give back to the territory, and as such we recognised the importance of a well-supported education system. We will continue to support as best we can, the youth of this territory to ensure they have a successful future.”

According to the education ministry, Delta Petroleum selectively has given various contributions to schools in the territory over the years. It added that the company stepped up its contributions for the first time last year, and has decided to give assistance to all public and private schools locally.

The education ministry has sought to have the business community invest in schools through the ‘Adopt-a-School’ Initiative.

As a result, most public schools in the territory have been adopted by organisations, and are recipients of financial support throughout the year.
