Destra injured, may not come to festival

Chairman of the Virgin Islands Festival and Fairs Committee Trefor Grant said it is too soon to tell whether Trinidadian Soca artiste Destra Garcia will still perform at this year’s Emancipation Festival.

Garcia is scheduled to perform at the East End leg of the festival next week Wednesday. But there are now questions about her availability because she was injured in Bermuda last night, August 2.

The artiste reportedly fell through the stage while she performed at an event called Cupmatch Summer Splash.

The Trinidadian media has reported that the singer’s manager, Brian Morris, said Destra sustained a broken ankle because of the fall.

“I know she has gotten injured, but the extent is not confirmed. She’s actually on her way seeking treatment in the United States,” Grant told BVI News Online this morning.

“I wish I could tell you [if she will make it to the BVI]. At this point, I don’t know. It depends on what the doctors say after she is evaluated.”

Grant said there is no backup plan in place at this time, in the event that Destra is unable to attend. “We haven’t crossed that bridge yet. This [incident] happened this morning,” Grant said.

Having been called to perform at festival for a number of years in the BVI, Destra has become somewhat of a staple at the annual emancipation festivities.

The artiste also has not been having the best of times. A few weeks ago, a Belizean court ordered her to pay damages to a male fan who ruptured his bladder during a dance she had with him on stage in 2015.
