Regional heads of telecommunications giant Digicel have committed to overhauling its Information and Communications Technology (ICT) network in the British Virgin Islands.

Digicel’s CEO for the Caribbean and Central America Vannesa Slowey, gave the commitment while meeting with Premier Dr D Orlando Smith last week.

Commenting on his talks with Slowey, Dr Smith said: “I had very positive discussions with our friends at Digicel and welcome their support for the BVI’s recovery and the investment they will make in the ICT network as we rebuild after hurricanes Irma and Maria.”

“Digicel shares our vision of building a more resilient BVI,” he added.

News of the Premier’s discussions with the regional Digicel boss comes days after government announced plans to move critical parts of BVI’s communication infrastructure underground.

Talks about an ICT overhaul in the BVI also come amid a UK-sanctioned report labelling the BVI as an underperforming country that has one of the most expensive internet services in the world.

The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC) has dodged responsibility for the territory’s poor internet service.
