Father sentenced for beating daughter with wire

Fitzroy Hanley has been ordered to pay a total of $3,500 after he beat his 19-year-old daughter with an electrical wire.

Magistrate Ayanna Baptiste-DaBreo made the order yesterday (February 28) when the offender appeared in court for sentencing.

Hanley was told that, if he doesn’t compensate his daughter $1,500, he will serve four months at Her Majesty’s Prison.

The magistrate also slapped Hanley with a $2,000 fine for the offence. He will serve another four months in prison if he does not pay the fine.

The offending father has until June 30 to pay the sums.

Reports are that Hanley gave his daughter his debit card with specific instructions about her college tuition and groceries.

Days after the instructions were given, Hanley received a bank statement and was reportedly dissatisfied with what he had seen.

The court heard that he asked his daughter about the use of the debit card, and he became angry about her response.

Hanley then picked up a piece of electrical wire, which he used to beat his daughter, the court heard.

She suffered injuries to the hands, thighs, left shoulder, and buttocks. Her lips were also swollen reportedly as a result of being slapped across the face.

When police cautioned Hanley about the report made against him, he responded: “I understand.”

He was subsequently charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
