Form mentoring groups to stop crime on infamous basketball court

Walwyn

Minister responsible for youth affairs Myron Walwyn has called on residents to form mentoring groups for youngsters who are engaging in illegal activities at the community level.

Walwyn made the call following fresh reports that persons are using the basketball court in Huntum’s Ghut as a hub to conduct illegal activities.

According to one resident who feared being singled out for raising an alarm, local government needs to intervene urgently.

He was speaking at a poorly-attended public meeting with residents of the Fifth Electoral District at Althea Scatliffe Primary School yesterday.

“It (illegal activities) is in my area [and] I take pride in this area. I have mentioned it to several people. Nobody doing nothing about it,” the resident said.

“Let’s try to save our youths and do something about locking up that place (the basketball court). The activities don’t look good… so please do something about that. I think that you all should make it a priority. Try to get it under control because it is not a nice scene,” the residents said while addressing government officials.

But, Minister Walwyn said closing the basketball court is not the appropriate solution.

“We have to look at the bigger problem… Form a little group, and do a little mentoring with them [the youths]. Try to get them to do the right thing because once you close that facility; if they are set on doing that (illegal activities), they will move to another location,” Walwyn said.

The minister said the matter was brought to his attention before the September hurricanes. He said the ministry had started to address the issue and will give the matter attention once more.

A number police busts – mostly drug-related – have happened at the said basketball court.

Some of your points may be valid but we the fact remains that this issue needs to be address.
I am sure they had the older guys in mind when they build the multipurpose shed pick up shed which was destroyed by Irma.
But the age of those kids hanging out at that location is mind blowing.
I’m beginning to wonder if these parents are blind or just ignorant to where their children are and who they are hanging out with?

The government alone cannot handle everything. Where are the churches, parents, and concerned men and women in the community. We are each other’s keeper. Where has “It takes a village to raise a child ” slogan gone. People are too selfish and wrapped up in themselves. we no longer look out for each other .The new word is “He is from down the island, he is not one of us.The down the island” me nah come from here it s not my problem” We have to get out of that mentality and help each other or our generation would go down the drain So that neither locals or expatriate would be safe. Look at the unsolved crimes in the police force. Don/t you think people o more than the olice. “Nature’s Little SECRET” Living up to its name.

What has the church to do with this? Most of the children were born out of wedlock. The society chose to raise the children without Christ. The Social Development will not allow parents to discipline the children as necessary. The chips are down and you are now accusing the church. it does not work that way. The society to turn a new leaf

Where is the basketball court he is talking about?

  4. Hmmm says:

Small crime comes as a result of major crime but the small crime goes to jail while the big crimes go with our money over an over priced wall
