Correlation? Protection order requests skyrocket during festival time

Authorities at the Family Support Network (FSN) believe there is a correlation between domestic violence and the annual emancipation festivities in the British Virgin Islands.

Administrative Assistant at FSN Deidra Massicote pointed out the correlation while noting the increase in requests for protection orders around the time of festival.

Massicote said the FSN usually receives the majority of its domestic violence-related cases for the year during the festival season.

“We see that pattern every year,” Massicote said. “In the last two days, we handled about four protection orders.”

While she was unable to provide statistics, Massicote said females are usually the ones filing protection orders against their partners.

Effectively, a protection or a restraining order is a civil court order issued to prevent continuing acts of family violence, sexual assault, human trafficking, or stalking.

People consume more alcohol

Meanwhile, Director of the FSN Sasha Stoutt sought to explain the reasons behind the hike in protection orders during festival.

Stoutt said one reason is increase alcohol consumption at festival time.

“Festival is a great time. It is fun but you still have personal issues and that spills into it if you are drinking all the time – you are going to be a lot less like yourself,” she explained.

She said another possible reason hinges on jealousy.

“You might have jealousy issues, your girlfriend is going out all the time – those things happen,” she said.

Emancipation festivities usually kick off around late July to early August.

Listen…..domestic violence occurs every day….say it happens more publicly during festival and therefore it is more likely to be reported……but if you all actually take real stats including them men than get abused by their women…..the figure remains the same before, during, and after the festivities.
