Give a little more to culture in recovery plan — Walwyn

Minister of Culture Myron Walwyn speaks with a resident after a past Territory Day celebration.

Minister of Culture Myron Walwyn wants more money to be allocated to ‘Pride and Cultural Identity’ in governments proposed recovery plan.

He said the $2 million allotted to that area of the plan is inadequate.

“We have to do our best to give a little bit more and so we might actually have to do some reallocation coming out of these meetings because the matter of pride [and cultural identity] have been raised by persons in the community,” Walwyn said during a public meeting in the Fourth Electoral District recently.

He added: “The important tenets of our culture are the things we put by resolution to the House of Assembly on national signs and symbols and so forth [and] we will continue to work hard on that.”

Walwyn’s statement follows a similar call by Director of Culture, Luce Hodge-Smith weeks ago to pump more funds into the cultural sector.

The Director of Culture noted that capacity-building in archaeology and the performing arts, assistance for private museums to be rebuilt, a disaster management plan for historical sites, and a total review of the local cultural sector was lacking in the proposed plan.

Priorities

The plan outlined priorities such as restoring library services that have been displaced and repairing resources that have been lost or damaged.

Other initiatives as it relates to culture in the plan include reopening museums and other heritage sites as well as developing a performing arts centre and a national library.
