Governor activates NEOC ahead of Hurricane Beryl

“I am urging residents to advance their preparations in the event that the situation changes and we are impacted by Hurricane Beryl.” – Governor Jaspert

In anticipation of Hurricane Beryl, which is expected to pass south of the British Virgin Islands late Sunday, Governor Jaspert has activated the National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC).

He activated the NEOC Friday on the advice of Director of the Department of Disaster Management (DDM), Sharleen DaBreo.

Forecasters say there is a potential for Beryl to gradually weaken to tropical storm strength when it enters Caribbean waters. However, Governor Jaspert is advising residents to still get ready and stay ready.

“I am urging residents to advance their preparations in the event that the situation changes and we are impacted by Hurricane Beryl,” the governor said.

He said there are 26 buildings currently available to be used as emergency shelters, should the need arise. Not all 26 facilities have been publicly announced. However, the governor assured: “In the event that it is necessary to activate these shelters, we will do so in a timely manner”.

“It is important that we continue to work together to ensure that we are ready and remain ready for whatever path the storm takes. Myself, along with the DDM will continue to provide the public with guidance on the best measures to be taken as we continue to prepare”.

“As Government continues to ramp up its preparations, I ask that you do likewise – clear up debris, prioritise repairs, stock up on supplies, support those in the community who may need assistance,” he added.

Residents are advised to monitor the DDM and the various local media outlets for information in relation to Hurricane Beryl.

BVI News will continue to provide up-to-date weather information as it becomes available.
