Greater assistance coming to Anegada, governor assures

Governor Augustus Jaspert

Anegada residents have been promised greater assistance in recovery efforts and in preparing for future disasters.

Residents received the assurance during and a community meeting with Governor Augustus Jaspert and other officials last Friday, July 6.

Jaspert and his delegation – which included officials such as Deputy Governor David Archer, and Director of the Department of Disaster Management (DDM) Sharleen  DaBreo – also visited a number of businesses on the island.

Business operators were then able to voice their concerns.

DDM Director DaBreo said the initiative to engage the community was ‘well-received’.

“Persons expressed their gratitude to the Governor and Deputy Governor for arranging to meet with them and to hear their concerns. A full list of the issues has been captured and we will now work with the various ministries to address these,” she said.

Other officials who participated in the meeting include Sister Islands Coordinator Vincent Wheatley and Director of the Adventist Development Relief Association (ADRA), Jacob Adolphus.

Adolphus donated some 55 blood glucose machines as part of the visit and 25 of the machines were distributed to the Anegada Medical Clinic.

Hurricane preparedness brochures were also distributed to keep residents informed about preparedness.

“The community had some concerns with the response following last year’s passage of Hurricane Irma but we did reassure them that ADRA – who is partnering with DDM, has come on board along with the Rotary Club and Red Cross to assist in certain areas. We do realise that DDM needs our help and whatever area we can help in the event of any hazard we will be there to assist,” Adolphus said.

Anegada is one of three stops to be made around the sister islands. Similar community meetings are being planned for Virgin Gorda and Jost van Dyke, government has said.

People saying that UK isn’t doing anything for us, but let the government come clean and say who really paying for the Housing Recovery program. I’ll answer, this is coming straight from the UK.

    • Think says:

You guys really have to learn how to become independent. Who is the one trying to threaten our financial services and label us as money laundering enablers which is so wrong as we meet the international standards on compliance. They find us to be too successful. All they looking to do is find leverage because if they really were to play fair, they couldn’t find fault with our already compliant industry. So keep sucking breast and don’t learn how to milk your own cow.

  2. Political Observer (PO) says:

In regards to the recovery effort, it seems like there is a two track effort, ie, Governor’s office and local government led by the Premier. Why can’t the recovery effort be centrally coordinated. The current process is ripe for finger pointing, picking sides, us against them……..etc. The dual track effort is counterproductive. Nonetheless, the sister islands are thankful for the effort. Normally, the sister Islands do not get it’s proportional share of the pie.
