Gumbs boycotts court

Carlos Gumbs has boycotted the Magistrate’s Court.

That was the information relayed to the court yesterday (March 8) when a three-year-old matter involving Gumbs was called up for trial.

Senior Magistrate Tamia Richards was told that Gumbs has refused to leave Her Majesty’s Prison to appear for the matter in which he is charged with using threatening language and throwing missiles.

The senior magistrate however had no intention to wait at Gumbs’ pleasure to have the matter tried.

She proceeded without the accused man being present.

A police officer, Nicholas Tranquille, later testified against Gumbs.

He told the court that, at the time of the incident, he received a report from complainant Kareem Rhymer.

Rhymer reportedly told the cop that Gumbs stoned him and threatened to gun him down.

The policeman said he executed a search warrant at Gumbs’ residence as a result of the complaint.

However, nothing pertaining to the warrant was found.

Gumbs was charged.

His next scheduled court date is April 4.

“If he doesn’t come, we will just proceed,” the no-nonsense senior magistrate said.

ALLEGATIONS

The prosecution is alleging that about 11pm on February 12, 2015 Rhymer was dealing with garbage at his business-place in Cane Garden Bay when Gumbs approached him in an ‘irate manner’.

Gumbs allegedly accused the complainant of ‘telling police something about him’.

The court heard that Rhymer told Gumbs that he was ‘crazy’, and Gumbs then said he was going for his gun to shoot Rhymer.

It is further alleged that Gumbs picked up stones and started to throw them at Rymer, who managed to avoid being hit.

Subsequent to those allegations, Gumbs was convicted and sentenced to two years imprisonment in an unrelated case. He was found guilty after law enforcers seized an illegal gun from him at the Magistrate’s Court in Prospect Reef, Tortola.

Gumbs is also still before the court in relation to a 2013 burglary committed at a residence in Cane Garden Bay. The trial already started in this case.
