Young strongman Djimon Gumbs is officially the first athlete to make the national team that will represent the BVI at the 2018 Carifta Games to be held in The Bahamas.

The double Carifta Games medalist earned a spot on the BVI team by throwing to a distance of 52.73 metres in the Boys’ Discuss. At the time, he was competing in part-two of the BVI Athletics Association (BVIAA) Dag Samuels Developmental Meet Series held at the weekend.

His throw surpassed the national qualifying standard of 52 metres.

President of the BVIAA, Steve Augustine said he expects more qualifiers to be named after part-three of the local meet series is held in the next two weeks.

“The Carifta Games don’t put out standards that you have to meet to participate. But because we are trying to push our kids to do as best as they possibly can against their regional peers, we set standards here. This would mean that; providing that our athletes would be able to meet these standards, they should be able to go to the Carifta Games and do well,” said Augustine.

He said the BVIAA set standards based on past results in each discipline of the Carifta Games.

Competitive training

Local runners are yet to be selected for the national team because the last two parts to the Dag Samuels Development Meet were, effectively, competitive training exercises that focused on untraditional or off-distance races.

“Before giving them their true races, we normally give them some unconventional distances (such as the 60, 80, 150, 300, and 600-metre races) so that they can fine-tune their skills with their coaches before entering into the main event,” Augustine explained.

“The next meet that we have on the track; they are gonna have the conventional races – the 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, and the 1,500-metre races.”

“I would presume that once that race is held – not this weekend but the following weekend – we will have some additional qualifiers [for the Carifta Games]. I am actually certain of that,” he added.

This year’s Carifta Games will be held from March 30 to April 2.
