A homosexual and transgender sailing crew known as Trekr Adventures has announced that it is gearing up to visit the British Virgin Islands (BVI) this month to participate in the 2017 BVI Spring Regatta.

The group said the arrangements were made through an international company called The Moorings, which is said to have extensive bases all over the world.

“After some brainstorming about how to increase LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender) visibility in the sailing industry, we decided that we wanted to enter an all-LGBT team in a major international regatta. After a few discussions with The Moorings, we decided to enter the BVI Spring Regatta at the end of March. It is one of the top regattas of the Caribbean,” said Trekr Adventures.

It further stated that its aim for participating in the event is to – among other things – encourage more of LGBT people to sail.

“Our goal is twofold. First, we want to raise the visibility of the LGBT community in the professional racing community. Second, we want to encourage more of LGBT individuals to get involved in sailing.”

The group, which stated that it travels to places that are ‘interesting and unique’, said the response to its sailing initiative generally has been overwhelming.

“When we started Trekr, we had no idea how many of our friends would end up wanting to explore the world while sailing. The response has been overwhelming and we continue to grow by leaps and bounds. As Trekr has become more familiar with the yachting industry, we learned about LGBT sailing clubs across the country and how important sailing has been in many LGBT people’s lives,” added Trekr Adventures.

The LGBT group, in a statement on its website, also named the members of the ‘inaugural’ Trekr Racing team that will sail in the BVI Spring Regatta.

In the meanwhile, outsports.com has reported that Director of the BVI Spring Regatta Judy Pete has offered praise to the all-LGBT crew for introducing or expanding the opportunity for everyone to sail.

It also quotes Pete as saying: “The very nature of sailing is one that encompasses people from around the world and from every lifestyle.”
