Horse Owners Association boss named as PVIM candidate

Lesmore Smith

President of the BVI Horse Owners Association Lesmore Smith has joined the Progressive Virgin Islands Movement’s (PVIM) team of candidates who will contest the 2019 General Elections.

Smith will contest the elections as a Territorial At-Large candidate; bringing to totality the four PVIM candidates that will vie for an At-Large seat.

PVIM Chairman Ronnie Skelton announced Smith as a candidate on Tuesday.

“Lesmore is a self-made man,” Skelton said. “He has worked himself from the ground up and Lesmore is someone who I welcome to this team because of his ingenuity and his forthrightness to work hard and accomplish what he wants.”

Under Smith’s leadership, the BVI was able to restore functionality to the Ellis Thomas Downs in Sea Cows Bay and return horseracing to the BVI after being dormant for more than a year after the September 2017 hurricanes. The BVI had its first post-hurricane races on December 26 last year.

In the meantime, the remaining slate of PVIM candidates comprises clergyman Curnal P Fahie, Shaina Smith, and Skelton who are all At-Large contenders.

The party is further fielding sitting legislator Melvin ‘Mitch’ Turnbull to seek re-election in the Second District; taxi operator Karl Scatliffe who will vie for the Fourth District; recently-resigned Commissioner of Customs Wade Smith for the Fifth; and former Deputy Projects Manager in the Ministry of Finance, Jose de Castro, who to contest the Ninth District seat.

many persons travelled because of the hurricanes for one reason or another. are any of the slated parties (like any other country would) going to show willingness to return those who want to return to vote?

I am still not impressed by 85% of the candidates who have declared todate. If that’s the best we can do the BVI is really in a bad state. Personally, anyone seeking Political office should have benefitted from a Masters Degree in political science, finance or economics or Law. This is the age we live in. I can’t imagine someone without a degree holding a Ministerial po and being very effective at it. Just my two cents.

Your/that view, expressed many times by many, should be the minimum standard set for anyone choosing to enter into political leadership/representation.

Yet, judging from the responses and interest to such an idea, it appears that most are not in favour and as such are still favouring mediocrity over intellectual quality in our politics.

This country ran better under farmers/construction workers like lavity, cills, prince, riel, alvin and terrence them so rather than these modern day bandits

I think I should have added that those qualifications I eluded to should go along with personal integrity. Had our past leaders had both the educational qualifications and deep personal integrity we would have been in a better place as a country. Will all due respect, the era we now live in and the challenges we face are beyond those that were in power 30 years ago.

  17. Sixth says:

I wished he had run in the Sixth District because I honestly don’t know who to vote for from the 2 it has there right now.
