Irma’s Aftermath – What you need to know (Sept. 11)

If you are in the British Virgin Islands at this time, these are some of the things you may need to know today. BVI News Online will update the information seen here as the days progress.

Only  charter flights operating.

Airport Tower/ BVI Ports Authority now operational.

Curfew still in effect. The curfew falls between the hours of  6:00 pm and 6:00 am daily

Not all business establishments destroyed in the Hurricane, including some in the financial services sector.

Additional security brought in from the UK to help curtail looting, restore law and order. 

Premier says “comprehensive economic package for reconstruction” to rebuild the territory will be need. Financial help will be needed from UK

Local telecommunications providers working to restore telephone services. Service available in parts of the territory.

Aid distribution continues.

 The British Navy is assisting with the clearing of roadways. Beef Island Airport has been cleared.

A State of Emergency has been declared for the entire British Virgin Islands.

It has been confirmed that at least 5 persons have lost their lives.

A National Emergency Operation Centre has been set up at the Peebles Hospital.
