Liquor thief appeals for more counselling

A man who stole a bottle of liquor from One Mart supermarket in Purcell Estate nearly two years ago, Delwin Percival, has walked away without imprisonment or even a monetary penalty.

He was sentenced this month.

The 29 year-old offender, during a previous court appearance, pleaded guilty to theft. Since then, he had been attending rehabilitation classes.

“The court does not believe that any further punishment is required. So you are therefore convicted, reprimanded, and discharged,” Senior Magistrate Tamia Richards told the offender.

She gave the order after Percival told the court that he has been changing his lifestyle.

He also asked for an opportunity to continue the counselling sessions.

“Your Honour, I’m sorry, and I still want to attend the classes you are sending me to… I see that I’m improving myself,” Percival told the senior magistrate.

He was charged with theft after he stole a bottle of brandy from One Mart supermarket on October 9, 2015.

Reports are that a CCTV technician saw Percival enter the store on the day in question. He was acting in a ‘suspicious’ manner.

The offender then lifted the alcoholic beverage from one of the shelves, and tucked it into his waistband.

He then exited the establishment.

The matter was reported to the police, who later accosted Percival. During a police interview, the offender initially claimed that he paid for the item before he left the supermarket.

In the meantime, Percival will return to court on October 27 in relation to other matters.
