Magnitude 3.61 quake felt in BVI

A 3.61 magnitude earthquake was felt in the British Virgin Islands (BVI) before daybreak today, May 23.

The Puerto Rico Seismic Network (PRSN) indicates that the quake happened in the Virgin Islands region at 1:46am, adding that the epicentre was at a depth of 25 kilometres (or 16 miles) and at location 18.86 latitude, 64.32 longitude.

No tsunami watches or warnings were issued for the BVI, said the territory’s Department of Disaster Management (DDM).

DDM also used the opportunity to remind residents that they live in a seismically active zone, which makes the territory vulnerable to earthquakes.

“During an earthquake, it is important to stay calm. If you are inside, stay there, move away from ceiling fans, glass windows and doors or anything that may fall. Get under a desk or sturdy piece of furniture, cover your head, and hold on. If outdoors, move into an open area away from trees, buildings, or utility wires and poles,” the DDM advised.

It further said, “During an earthquake, the more you move, the more likely you are to be hurt. So refrain from entering or exiting a building at the time of the impact.”
