Man beaten for allegedly threatening to murder

Magistrate’s Court at John’s Hole, Tortola

A 46-year-old man who reportedly claimed he beat another man for threatening to shoot him has been put on $30,000 bail.

Val Hendricks is before the Magistrate’s Court on common assault and criminal damage charges.

He was not made to plead to either of the charges when he appeared before Senior Magistrate Tamia Richards.

Allegations by the prosecution are that, on December 16 last year, the complainant Paul Alexander visited a bar at Little Harbour on Jost Van Dyke to buy a drink.

Hendricks accosted the complainant and allegedly grabbed him by the collar, causing the complainant’s shirt to tear.

It is being alleged that Hendricks punched the complainant in the face twice.

The court heard that Hendricks also threatened to murder the complainant for ‘calling up his name’.

The incident was reported to police who took Hendricks into custody.

During a police interview, Hendricks told the law enforcers that the complainant in the matter had threatened to ’empty a clip on him’.

Hendricks reportedly claimed that he instinctively grabbed the complainant by the collar ‘to check him for weapons’.

The accused also reportedly told police that he later struck the complainant.

After hearing the allegations, Magistrate Richards offered the accused man bail. He will return to court on October 22.
