Man pleads not guilty to beating ex-girlfriend

Grenada native Roger Alexander has denied allegations that he stole from his ex-lover and beat her to the point of physical injury.

He pleaded not guilty to the three charges that arose out of the alleged beating – assault occasioning actual bodily harm, criminal damage, and two counts of theft.

Alexander answered to the charges when he appeared before Senior Magistrate Tamia Richards.

The 35-year-old accused is expected to contest the allegations when he goes on trial on July 7.

The prosecution alleged that, in a moment of jealous rage, Alexander launched an attack that caused scratches, bruises, and swelling on the woman’s body.

The two were in a romantic relationship that ended in 2015.

Following that, the woman left the British Virgin Islands (BVI), and returned on January 6 last year.

When she arrived, Alexander allegedly met her and demanded that she stay in his company. She refused.

Alexander allegedly held her luggage, grabbed her hand, and took away her $1,500 diamond ring.

The court heard that the woman then called out to three security guards for help, but none assisted her.

The accused man then accompanied the woman to her Virgin Gorda residence. While there, he allegedly started to unpack the woman’s luggage.

The prosecution alleged that Alexander used a knife to cut a pair of the woman’s sneakers. It is also said that he told her not to call anyone, then left.

Further allegations are that, about 9:30 in the evening, the complainant was at home when she heard her front door being opened.

Alexander returned, allegedly took the woman’s cellular phone, and searched it.

Alexander found photos in the phone that were ‘not to his taste’.

As such, he allegedly slapped the woman in the face.

Further allegations are that the woman cried for him to stop, but he tore her tank top, and fisted her on the arm, back, and elsewhere on the body.

Alexander then grabbed the woman by the throat and threatened to kill her, it is alleged.

The court was told that she kicked him away and tried to leave the apartment, but he grabbed her and told her that she was not going anywhere.

He spent the night at the home and left the next day, the court heard.

It is further reported that Alexander later called the woman.

The incident was reported subsequently to police.
