Man sentenced for handling stolen goods

Nickail Chambers has been fined $2,000 in the Magistrate’s Court for handling a stolen goods.

Magistrate Ayanna Baptiste-DaBreo gave the Sugar Mill Road resident until November 11 to pay the fine or he will serve six months at Her Majesty’s Prison.

While sentencing Chambers yesterday, the magistrate also ordered him to pay $800 to the complainant in the matter. She ordered Chambers to pay the compensation forthwith.

Meanwhile, Chambers is also facing another unrelated charge of handling stolen goods. In that case, he is  jointly charged with handling a stolen ring. The other accused is Kiover Hatchett.

Hatchett, who is currently on remand for an unrelated offence, did not make an appearance with Chambers.

Reports in the ring case were that, on January 13 this year, the complainant in the ring case secured his Long Bush residence and left for work.

When he returned home later that day, he realised that his house was burglarised and a number of jewellery stolen.

The court heard that three gold rings with a combined value of $2,250, and a gold hand chain valued at $1,100 were removed from his residence.

After conducting a personal investigation into the burglary, the complainant met Chambers’ father, who reportedly handed over one of the stolen rings.

A report was then made to police, who later accosted Hatchett.

Police said Hatchett denied burglarising the complainant’s home. When shown the ring that was returned, Hatchett reportedly told the cops that he had bought the item from someone for $150.

It is alleged that Hatchett told law enforcers that he later sold the ring to Chambers, because he suspected it had been stolen.

Police met and cautioned Chambers, who allegedly said: “I do not know what you are talking.” Chambers, however, admitted that he bought the ring from his co-accused Hatchett for $1,200.

He further claimed that he gave it to his father to return to the complainant when he discovered that it was stolen.
