Men confess nearly three years later

Shakeem Potter during a previous court appearance

Two men who were accused of being in possession of 22 grams marijuana nearly three years ago finally have admitted to the offence.

Jeremiah Pickering and Shakeem Potter came clean with a guilty plea this week during what was supposed to be the start of their trial in the Magistrate’s Court.

The men, who are residents of East End, initially pleaded not guilty.

Following the change in their plea this week, Senior Magistrate Tamia Richards ordered the two offenders to seek drug counselling.

Reports are that members of the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force were on mobile patrol in the East End area of Tortola on November 18, 2014 when they saw Potter and Pickering inside a parked vehicle.

The two were acting in what police said was a suspicious manner.

The police accosted them, searched their vehicle, and reportedly discovered a quantity of marijuana.

The duo was taken into custody.

During a police interview at the time, Pickering reportedly claimed that the marijuana belonged to him. Potter, on the other hand, denied ownership of the illicit substance.

Both men were charged. They are scheduled to return to court on September 15.
