Motorist fined after hit and run

A motorist accused of hitting another person’s vehicle with his car before fleeing the accident scene has been fined $1,475.

Dale Peters, a native of St Vincent, was sentenced today after he pleaded guilty to five traffic offences in the Magistrate’s Court.

He was fined for failing to stop at the scene of an accident, driving without due care and attention, driving when not covered by a policy of insurance, driving an unlicensed vehicle, and using a license plate on a vehicle to which it was not assigned.

A breakdown of the sentence shows Magistrate Ayanna Baptiste DaBreo fining the traffic offender $200 or four days imprisonment for the hit and run charge, $200 or four days for careless driving, and another $200 or four days for the license plate offence.

Peters was then told to pay $750 or serve two months at Her Majesty’s Prison for driving without insurance. He was fined an additional $125 or four days imprisonment for driving an unlicensed vehicle.

Peters has until the end of January to make the payment.

In the meantime, reports are that, about minutes to midnight on June 26 last year, the complainant was driving her motor vehicle along the Blackburn public road.

Peters was driving directly behind her.

Reports are that the complainant, upon reaching a section of the roadway, stopped behind a number of vehicles.

Peters’ vehicle immediately collided into hers, causing damage.

He then fled the scene, the court heard.

Some time after, police met the offender who admitted to crashing into the complainant’s vehicle.

He is scheduled to return to court on March 27 when a compensation order is expected to be made.
