While stating that he expects the August Monday parade this year to be grand, culture minister Myron Walwyn has urged more community groups to join the several that he said are already down to participate.

“As we create a cultural scene for festival 2017, I encourage our local groups, dancers, schools, and associations to partake in our annual August Monday parade.”

“I have been receiving great feedback from the committee, and we anticipate that this year’s parade will be grand. Several troupes have already started to promote their costumes and partial routines on social media, creating a friendly competitive hype that has not been seen in years,” Walwyn said, adding that persons who are interested in joining the parade should collect registration forms at the Department of Culture.

BVI News Online has tried to get more information regarding the registration process, the number of groups registered so far, and the types of groups that have been expressing an interest.

When we dialed a telephone number provided for Kishma Robinson who heads the emancipation parade committee, the female who answered was in no mood to talk with the press. “You don’t need to talk with me; talk with Festival and Fairs Committee; thank you,” she said as the phone line abruptly went dead.

The British Virgin Islands is commemorating 63 years of emancipation celebrations this year under the theme: A colourful kaleidoscope to be seen, creating a cultural scene for festival 2017.
