Leaders from both sides of the political divide joined other residents this morning to again pay homage to the British Virgin Islands’ first chief minister, Hamilton Lavity Stoutt, who passed away on My 14, 1995.
Premier Dr D Orlando Smith, Leader of the Opposition Andrew Fahie, and Minister of Culture Myron Walwyn all spoke glowingly of Mr Stoutt and his sterling contribution to the development of the territory.
In addition to speeches, there were a number of performances, as well as wreath-laying and a march to mark the 17th annual commemorative ceremony.
It was held at Cappoon’s Bay Burial Grounds.
The first Monday in March each year is observed as a public holiday locally to honour Mr Stoutt, who was born on March 7, 1929.
