For the second consecutive time, the British Virgin Islands’ Family Affairs Stables won the feature race during the annual Boxing Day Races at the Ellis Thomas Downs in Sea Cow’s Bay, Tortola.
A relatively large crowd was present at the venue yesterday to witness Honors cop the win in a time of 1:31.3 over seven furlongs.
I’m Sensational of No Limit Stables in St Thomas, US Virgin Islands, took second place, while Pumped Up Kicks – also from St Thomas – finished third.
Winning jockey Jose Ferrer said he came out on top because he did not rush to take the lead; he waited for the right time.
“There was like two or three horses going to the lead [at the start of the race]. So I said ‘You know what? It’s going to be suicide with these guys (other jockeys) over here, because I know they are going to be too fast going to the first turn’. I just wanted to save my horse a little bit and get it comfortable in the back side to have a little more for the end,” he explained.
“I wait my time and when it was time to go – for my horse to make move – that’s what I did… When I asked him to go, he took off like a jet,” Ferrer added.
The race carried a purse of $10,000 which is sponsored by Premier Dr D Orlando Smith.
In the meantime, other winners of the day were El Indultado, Gottcha Blessing, Top Class Citizen, and Totally Evil.
