The Virgin Islands Search and Rescue’s (VISAR) fundraiser held on Sunday has been deemed successful.

The annual event dubbed Swim and Stand Up Paddling (SUP) was hosted at Leverick Bay on Virgin Gorda.

“It was fantastic. We had a really good turn out. Everyone was excited to be up in the sound and be active. The kids had a blast. It was a really fun day and that was our goal. Everything went smoothly,” said Operations Manager at VISAR, Julie Schneider.

The contest

According to Schneider, the fundraiser saw a total of 55 participants competing in one and two-mile races as well as the SUP.

Eight participated in the one-mile, 26 in the two-mile, and 21 in the SUP.

In the one-mile race, Elizabeth Besom emerged in first place followed by Smiramis Sarkardei and Governor Augustus Jaspert.

In the two-mile race, Shane Donovan was the champion followed by Clinton Hempel and Natasha Ruscheinski. And in the SUP contest, Saskie Laing won while Ewout Franse placed second and Kim Takeguchi placed third.

There were also competitors under the age of 18 taking part. They were Kurt Salapere for the two-mile race, and Matthew and Benedict Grayson for the SUP.

The winners walked away with trophies. Additionally, each participant received a t-shirt and a participatory medal.

Schneider explained that the event was to garner much-needed funds for VISAR’s day-to-day operations.
