Some residents in the First District community of Carrot Bay will not have much use for generators anymore.

This is because power has been restored to sections of that community, which is said to be one of the worst affected by the September 2017 hurricanes.

Electricity was restored yesterday, hours before a government-organised public meeting in Carrot Bay about the proposed recovery plan for the territory.

Premier Dr D Orlando Smith said the power being restored in time for the meeting was coincidental.

“I’m glad that it (electricity) has finally gotten down here and I must say I did not tell them that we were coming here today (February 12). It’s just the natural progress of what the BVIEC has been doing over the past several months,” the Premier told residents.

First District Representative Andrew Fahie also said he was pleased that power has been restored to the community.

“Premier, you came in a good time. It’s the first we have power here since September 6,” Fahie said.

Power is said to be restored to roughly 80 percent or more of the British Virgin Islands.

According to a recent BVI News report, more than 90 percent power has been restored on Virgin Gorda while restoration on the island of Jost Van Dyke is said to be between 80 and 90 percent. Tortola is also said to be in the 80 percent range.

The September 2017 hurricanes had damaged some 12,000 poles, 400 miles of conductor cable, 2,200 pole-mounted transformers, and 3,500 streetlights across the territory.

I just want to thank the BVI Electricity Team for restoring our neck of the woods. You should have seen some people doing the victory dance yesterday afternoon. I pray that the entire territory will be back on track very soon so that you all can get the rest you are all deserving of.

Still don’t have power up the hill. Don’t even see anyone working on it. Valard still stripping our posts for parts. How many more months with this little gas generator?
