Having stepped aside as leader of the National Democratic Party (NDP), Premier Dr D Orlando Smith has issued a word advice to his successor, Myron Walwyn.

The Premier, who had been NDP leader for roughly two decades, advised Walwyn to “always keep the people first.”

“The progress and development of this country are what should be uttermost in the mind all the time,” he said.

The Premier gave the advice while offering congratulations to the new NDP leader, the new deputy leader Marlon Penn, and all who were elected during the party’s internal election on Saturday.

Walwyn was elected party leader after defeating his contender, Ronnie Skelton by 17 votes. The results were 68 to 51 votes.

In the race for deputy leader, Penn defeated first-term legislator Melvin ‘Mitch’ Turnbull by 19 votes. The votes were 69 to 50 votes.

Meanwhile, Dr Smith’s time as Premier and territorial leader will officially be complete at the end of his administrations’ term in office, which is in a year.

The Premier said he will use his remaining time as leader to focus on hurricane recovery.

Myron Walwyn is likely to become the next Premier of the territory if the NDP is elected for a third consecutive term in government.

But, if the party loses, the next Premier is likely to be Andrew Fahie.

Neither Fahie nor Walwyn has ever held the post of Premier or Chief Minister.
