Prison officer released from hospital

David Foot

Superintendent of Prisons David Foot said the prison officer who suffered a ‘minor’ head injury during an attack on the job yesterday has been released from hospital.

He added that the prisoner who allegedly inflicted the wound is likely to be prosecuted, pending advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

Superintendent Foot said two other inmates at Her Majesty’s Prison also became agitated during the incident, but calm was restored eventually.

“We had an incident in which an official was assaulted by a prisoner, and a couple of other prisoners started to become involved. So all the prisoners were restrained and removed to the segregation unit, and the situation calmed down…”

“I will go to the DPP to see if it’s worthy of a prosecution. Otherwise, the prison remained calm and there had been no other problems or issues throughout the day,” added Superintendent Foot.

The prison officer was the only person wounded in the incident, BVI News Online has been told.
