Rotary lights up Port Purcell

Residents and motorists travelling in the vicinity of the James Walter Francis Highway are in for a visual treat during after-dark hours with the Christmas lights that have been creatively strung around the roundabout in Port Purcell, Tortola.

The Rotary Club of Tortola decorates the roundabout annually. This year, however, the club was determined to make their decorations a bit more festive.

“We wanted to bring some extra joy to the area and to the people that really drive around here because we’ve all been through so much this past year,” explained President of the Rotary Club of Tortola, Lynette Harrigan.

As evident in the finished product, Harrigan said a lot of thought and effort was put into lighting their adopted roundabout this Christmas.

“We started working on the design a few weeks ago and then we had the lights come in … We took just one weekend to put this all together. We had a great support team that really worked with us. The Rotarians came out and we did it ourselves, as we usually do,” Harrigan said.

The roundabout came alive on Monday evening for the official lighting ceremony. The cheerful Rotarians then lingered at the location to sing carols as motorists traversed the area.

Representative of the Sixth District (where the roundabout is located) Alvera Maduro Caines described the effort as ‘spectacular’.

“They really outdid themselves,” she said.

Rotary, in the meantime, will continue to spread Christmas cheer with a number of other activities for the season.

These will include donations to local clinics and schools as well as going carolling at Peebles Hospital and the Adina Donovan Home for the Elderly.

Can the Rotary Club pay for the electricity as well instead of the electricity board sending it to we to pay?
