Salmonella threat: RiteWay recalls Kellogg’s Honey Smacks cereals

RoadTown Wholesale — which owns RiteWay food markets, Fine Foods, Harbour Market, and Cash Carry stores in the territory — has issued a recall of all 15.3 and 23-ounce Kellogg’s Honey Smacks cereals.

The food company issued the recall on June 16 following reports that those products were contaminated with salmonella.

Effectively, salmonella is a type of bacteria that affect the intestinal tract.

According to reports, Kellogg has launched an investigation with the third-party manufacturer who produces Honey Smacks immediately after being contacted by the Food & Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) regarding reported illnesses.

Use or consumption of products contaminated with Salmonella may result in serious illness, according to the CDC.

It can also produce serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy individuals infected with salmonella can experience fever, diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

The illness usually lasts four to seven days, and most persons recover without treatment.

In rare circumstances, salmonella can result in the bacteria getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses.

“We are sorry for the inconvenience and we appreciate your assistance in helping us complete the recall,” RoadTown Wholesale has said.
