School meets raffle target, more fundraisers ahead

Pelican Gate School’s goal of taking a number of its students on an educational excursion to Jamaica is now closer to becoming a reality.

Following what has been described as a successful raffle of a 2018 Toyota Yaris, airfare and hotel accommodations can now be paid for 20 of its students.

Organisers at the West End-based school are looking to bring roughly 50 students on the excursion, which they hope to embark on next academic year.

“We still have quite a way to go in terms of raising the amount of money. But, the projected amount of money we made from the car raffle; we achieved that goal,” school Principal Lois Freeman-Augustine told BVI News.

She did not disclose how much was raised during the raffle but said the school has about $125,000 to raise overall.

With that goal, Principal Freeman-Augustine said the school will be undertaking more fundraisers.

She said they are hoping to do a cake sale, a family fun day, and perhaps another car raffle.

In the meantime, the school principal thanked the public for their support in the raffle which took place on April 15 at The Moorings on Tortola.

Guy Strickland was the lucky ticket-holder who was randomly selected as the winner of the Toyota Yaris.

Virgin Islands Motors donated the prize vehicle.
