Schools running out of space for returning students

As the British Virgin Islands continue to show signs of normalcy and evacuees are returning to the territory, the Ministry of Education has said schools are running out of space to accommodate returning students.

Several schools were damaged by the September hurricanes, forcing the ministry to house students in makeshift structures or at schools that sustained minimal damage during the category 5 storms.

Students were also required to register in schools that were closest to their homes, but as the academic year moves into its second term, Education Minister Myron Walwyn said returning students might not get placed in schools near to where they live.

“There are some schools that are now almost at their full capacity,” Walwyn explained.

“Some of the schools where they live might be full. So for the ones that are coming back now, we have to deal with them on a space-by-space basis. Obviously, we would have to look for a school that is closest to where they live but if we cant, then we have to find them space where there is a space, and that is really what the process is now,” the minister said.

Problems

Walwyn made the disclosure to BVI News amid complaints from expat parents that they are having trouble re-registering their children who had evacuated after Hurricane Irma.

The minister, however, said parents of returning students should have little trouble getting their children back in school.

“If the children are under Immigration control — that is, they have time to be in the territory and they were going to school here before — then they are going to be allowed back into the school system,” Walwyn assured.

“Outside of the space issue, if anybody is having any greater difficulty, I would need to know about it,” he added.
