The state of emergency imposed following Hurricane Irma this month has been relaxed, and Government said it is again taking control of all its normal functions under the leadership of Premier Dr D Orlando Smith.

Under the full state of emergency, the United Kingdom-appointed governor, who now is Augustus Jaspert, was in charge of governance.

Now that the state of emergency has been relaxed, he is only in charge of the ongoing curfew.

Premier Dr D Orlando Smith made the announcement this afternoon, while he noted that the aforementioned decisions were made during a Cabinet meeting held yesterday.

Premier Smith, in a relatively brief statement this afternoon, explained: “Cabinet met on September 27 for the first time since the passage of hurricanes Irma and Maria. During this meeting, all aspects of the state of emergency put in place by His Excellency Governor Jaspert – with the advice of Cabinet, were reviewed and the state of emergency now only refers to matters of the curfew.”

“All other functions of the government will continue as normal, with the premier and ministers carrying out their cabinet responsibilities,” Premier Smith further said.
