Traffic lights restored on dual carriageway

Traffic lights on the Walter Francis Dual Carriageway has been restored.

The British Virgin Islands still has a far way to go on the road to recovery, but normalcy has began to take shape on the territory’s roadways with traffic lights being restored at one of Tortola’s major intersections.

The traffic light on the James Walter Francis Dual Carriageway is now fully operational after taking a beating last month – first from Hurricane Irma, and then from Hurricane Maria.

The once malfunctioning traffic light caused traffic to be backed up for miles.

The flow of traffic on the usually busy thoroughfare has noticeably improved since the lights were restored this week.

Motorists have lauded the government headed by Premier Dr D Orlando Smith for the fix.

“Yes, it (traffic) is flowing better now. When the light doesn’t work it’s congested because people [other drivers] don’t let you pass. But when the light work it’s smooth and accident free,” one motorist told BVI News Online as he waited for the traffic lights to change to green.

“Well, I glad to see it back up and running,” another motorist said.

The BVI Electricity Corporation has also started work on street lights along the said roadway.

Meanwhile, traffic lights located in the heart of Road Town is yet to be fixed. Hurricane force winds had caused those lights to break from where they hung over the road.
