Vanterpool now Acting Premier, Finance Minister

Mark Vanterpool

Minister of Communications and Works Mark Vanterpool has been appointed Acting Premier and Acting Minister of Finance.

Vanterpool’s appointment began on Sunday, June 10 and lasts until June 17.

He received the appointment since Premier Dr D Orlando Smith and Health Minister Ronnie Skelton are on official business in Asia.

Dr Kedrick Pickering was acting as Premier but is also now out of the territory and will return in a week.

Dr Pickering is in London attending a high-level political meeting.

According to a government media release issued on Monday, June 11, Vanterpool’s appointment is in accordance with the Virgin Islands Constitution Order, 2007 Section 55 (2) which states: “If both the Premier and the Deputy Premier are expected to be absent from the Virgin Islands for more than forty-eight hours, the Governor shall authorise another Minister designated by the Premier to perform the functions of the Office of Premier; and the Governor shall revoke this authority on the return to the Virgin Islands of either the Premier or the Deputy Premier.”

Is this a broad daylight — of the MEC? Or does the NDP has a rotation system as to whom will act as Premier when both the Premier and Deputy Premier are out of the country? Doc has not indicated that he is stepping down so is this shot across the bow of the current party leader by the MEC a place coup? Is the MCW going to run for re-election? School chiren are talking.

The combined cost of first class tickets for Doc Smith and Picko could fix the road from Nanny Cay to West End.
