Vanterpool: Stock up on medicine, food

While urging residents to ensure their homes have non-perishable food items and medical supplies, Minister of Communication and Works Mark Vanterpool said the government is working to heighten its level of preparedness for hurricanes such as Irma.

He noted that drain cleaning was still in full swing over the weekend.

The territory was forced into preparedness mode in early August when a tropical wave resulted in widespread flooding, showing up major problems in drainage systems especially across Tortola.

Vanterpool, on Facebook this morning, posted photos of ghut-cleaning works being done under the road near Methodist Burial Ground in the vicinity of Joe’s Hill and Crabbe Lot – also known as Ghetto.

“The work of cleaning ghuts continued over the weekend,” the minister said.

He continued: “As the government does its part to ensure that its preparedness level is high during this hurricane season, I encourage you as families, churches, organizations [and] individuals to make sure your homes have [non]-perishable food items and medical supplies; and debris is cleared from around your properties. We need to be as prepared as we can for Irma and other systems that may come our way.”

“Keep the prayers going for Texas, Barbados, the BVI and other places affected by recent storms. We have another three months before the Atlantic Hurricane Season ends,” Vanterpool further said.
