The British Virgin Islands has won its first medal in the history of the Commonwealth Games.

The history-making Kyron McMaster did not simply bag a medal but he finished with gold when he competed in the Men’s 400-metre hurdles inside the Carrara Stadium in Gold Coast, Australia on Thursday, April 12.

McMaster bolted out of the starting blocks and proved his dominance by stopping the clock at 48.25 seconds to claim victory.

He finished ahead of Jeffery Gibson of the Bahamas who ran 49.10 seconds to claim silver, and Jamaica’s Jaheel Hyde who ran 49.16 seconds for bronze.

This is now McMaster’s second gold medal at a senior international athletic championship – the first being at the IAAF Diamond League in Zurich last August.

Meanwhile, it was frenzy at Captain Mulligan’s on Tortola as local athletic fans erupted with excitement at 21-year-old McMaster’s performance.

Residents congregated at the establishment for a watch party put on by telecommunications company Flow, in collaboration with the BVI Commonwealth Games Association and the Ministry of Education and Culture.

Below is a video of McMaster’s performance in the 400-metre hurdles finals:

Junior Minister for Tourism Archibald Christian is clad in BVI colours as he watches the action at the 2018 Commonwealth Games being held in Australia.
