The Department of Disaster Management (DDM) said a weather system – Disturbance 1 – has been developing and people in the British Virgin Islands should watch it closely.

“Residents are urged to monitor the Disturbance as it has the potential to affect the British Virgin Islands,” the DDM said, adding that its assessment is based on information from a number of professional sources – some of which it has contracted.

DDM added that, based on further assessment, Disturbance 1 is located 250 miles to the west of the Cape Verde Islands, near latitude 16 degrees north, longitude 28 degrees west.

“It is moving to the west-north-west at about 18mph (miles per hour). This is expected to continue over the next few days, before turning more westward over the central Atlantic. The disturbance is showing signs of organization, and could become a tropical depression with any additional organization.”

“Latest model guidance suggests that it may become a threat to the northern Leeward Islands in about a week. However, it is too early to determine the exact track and intensity. The chance of development over the next seven days is 95 percent,” added the DDM.
