‘Where is our money?’ Taxi operators decry unaccountability

The building that houses the BVI Taxi Association.

Controversy is brewing among members of the BVI Taxi Association over claims of a lack of accountability and transparency. Calls are now being made for a change in leadership of the Association.

According to Association members who spoke to BVI News anonymously for fear of retaliation, taxi operators pay a weekly $15 levy but are being kept in the dark over the current financial standing of the organisation.

A number of long-standing members are reportedly no longer confident in the elected members.

Sources said questions about money management came to the fore after the September hurricanes which damaged sections of the Road Town-based building that houses the taxi association.

More questions were raised when the employee who handled the organisation’s finances reportedly evacuated the territory without informing the Association.

Taxi operators said their queries are being dismissed and said they fear the reason for silence is that their funds have been spent.

“It’s a serious matter,” one taxi operator said.

“The members need to put up a vote of no confidence against the president and call an election.”

“Some of the members pull off,” added the taxi operator who also said members are still expected to pay the weekly $15 fee.

All is well, says President

Meanwhile, President of the taxi association Allen Callwood dismissed claims that all was not well.

“We doing alright,” he said in response to questions from BVI News about the status of operations at the organisation.

However, when pressed for details about the financial issues, Callwood said: “You need to try to get that information from who you get that information (about the reported issues) from.”

He abruptly ended the call when BVI News declined to name the taxi operators who raised an alarm about the Association’s financial issues.

I agree but sadly everyone follows the Governments example which is shocking – when did they release properly audited accounts? Let’s face it they can’t even pay their utility bills never mind civil servants on time

Their nameless money handler evacuated? No forwarding address and no telephone number?
If this money handler was identified then he would be easily located and questions answered. Sounds to me like these taxi drivers are bored with their good fortune in the BVI and just stirring the pot for a some unwarranted sympathy.

They don’t want to be left out of the pity party. They would look bad if their organization was expected to donate a pencil or two to a school.Hence the sock and bull story about their unidentified money handler flying the coop.

The simplest things we cannot come together and achieve. We can’t manage $15 a month being contributed without a big bust up or argument but we want our Government and others to always give us first preference in everything.

Simple question. Why can’t the Association provide periodic financial accounting to its members? Is this not a normal expectation and best management practice? If people money is taken, you need to show where it is, what was expended……etc. Do we not beat up government every day for lack of responsibility and accountability? Issue a financial statement and keep your name out of people mouth.
