Approximately 1,500 people are expected to participate in the reenactment of the Great March of 1949 on Sunday, November 24, in honour of its 75th anniversary.

The event will be held under the theme, “A March, A Movement, A Milestone.” Announcing the event, Premier Dr. Natalio Wheatley stated, “As we reflect on the Great March of 1949, we pay homage to the indomitable spirit of our foreparents. Their relentless pursuit of democracy and representation has indelibly shaped the very fabric of our society. Let us march forth together, united in purpose, as we continue to champion the principles they so ardently upheld.”

According to the Premier’s office, approximately 1,500 participants will represent those who originally took part in the historic march. The Premier also invited the public to participate in this significant commemoration of the Virgin Islands’ journey toward democracy and representation.

The reenactment march will begin at 3 pm at the bandstand and proceed to the Sir Olva Georges Plaza, followed by a celebratory concert.

The original Great March took place on Thursday, November 24, 1949, when around 1,500 Virgin Islanders, led by Theodolph Faulkner of Anegada, Isaac “Glanny” Fonseca, and Carlton de Castro, staged a peaceful demonstration. They marched through Road Town to the Commissioner’s Office—now the Governor’s Office—to protest issues affecting Virgin Islanders’ quality of life.

Their protest, combined with a petition outlining demands for improved conditions, was presented to Commissioner J.A.C. Cruikshank. This mass demonstration set political advancement in motion for the Territory, leading to significant political and constitutional development in the Virgin Islands.

The march ultimately laid the groundwork for the restoration of the Legislative Council in 1950, now known as the House of Assembly, and empowered the people to elect representatives to serve their best interests.

In support of their unwavering quest for democracy, the people of the BVI need to march tomorrow. Waiting till November 24th won’t make a difference; we are too gullible in these islands, and it’s time to finally stand up to these autocrats!

      You are correct @Laura
If we march tomorrow, all the problems will go away – if we wait a month it will be too late.
