Junior strongman Djimon Gumbs and rising sprint sensation Beyonce DeFreitas has been named the BVI Athletic Association’s (BVIAA) Junior Athlete of the Year for 2017.
The awardees were both medalists at Commonwealth Youth Games held in The Bahamas last year.
Gumbs earned a bronze medal in the Boys’ Shot Put event while DeFreitas won a silver medal in the Girls’ 200m for the British Virgin Islands.
Gumbs and DeFreitas are also double and triple finalists respectively at the regional Carifta Games.
Local athletes in the Under-20 category are eligible for the BVIAA Junior Athlete of the Year Award.
Youth Athlete of the Year
In the Under-15 age category, Jaleel Croal and Akeela McMaster have been named BVIAA’s Youth Male and Female Athletes of the Year for 2017.
Croal, the 2017 Elmore Stoutt High School victor, ended the year as the top national 200m leader in his division.
A media release from the BVIAA said Croal’s season highlight was his strong performance in the heptathlon event at the North American Central American and Caribbean (NACAC) Age Group Championships held in Trinidad and Tobago last year.
At the same NACAC, his teammate young McMaster became the fourth BVI athlete since 1997 to claim an individual medal in the pentathlon event. She won bronze.
