The Ministry of Education has decided to suspend the use of the Althea Scatliffe Primary School building in Road Town after a report outlined challenges to the structural integrity of the edifice.

In a statement released today, the Ministry indicated that an inspection was conducted on the school and they received the yesterday.

The statement noted that the report recommended for authorities to suspend use of the building immediately.

“Based on this information, the Ministry agrees that the best option is to err on the side of caution by prioritising the safety of our students, faculty, and staff. As such, a decision has been made to close the building effective Friday, 17th June 2022 at 4:30 p.m. until further notice to ensure the safety of all,” the statement said.

“This morning the principal, faculty, and staff of the Althea Scatliffe Primary School were notified of this decision. Additionally, correspondence from the ministry was also shared with the principal to issue to parents urgently,” it continued.

The ministry has advised the principal to remove all personal items from the building. Additionally, the ministry will make arrangements with the principal to secure furnishings and student documents.

All events that were scheduled to take place in the building will now have to relocate.

In late October of last year, a classroom ceiling at the primary school had caved in. No one was hurt in the incident but Education Minister at the time, Dr Natalio Wheatley indicated that the ceiling tiles and the infrastructure that holds up the tiles were compromised.

In February of this year, Dr Wheatley noted the assessment on the roof was completed and the issue was resolved.

However, he had noted major work needed to be done on the structure. He said he hoped works could be done this summer.

You would have thought with all the hundreds of millions of government revenue which has been generated since the late 80’s the school buildings would have been well built and well maintained. I wonder why that didn’t happen?? Oh well, it’s only education…

HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS???? Have you ever looked at the published budgets? That figure is in the billions! Our budgets totaled about $333 million annually, making about 3 billion over the past 9 years alone!

      THIS IS SHAMEFUL.

      • ??? says:

At the end of the day $333M is not enough annual reviews to operate the country and boost a Reserve Fund. Think of maintenance on all building, government workers salaries and retitemrnt benefits costs, road repairs, ac unit replacements in buildings, welfare benefit payment, beach maintenance and erosion mitigation, internal security, liability insurance, etc.

Contracts and bidding should be scrutinized well before awarding it to save lives and prevent risking loss of lives and wasting tax payers money.
this is adverse effect of awarding contracts to mushroom, half-baked contractors.
It is sad that a leader doesn’t want competition with the locals in all areas. This is the outcome of such opinion.

Why the Ministry of Education and Culture did see to get this School repaired or fixed during the COVID-19 lockdowns.

Question? Is the whole building going to be
demolished and a next one built
or just some major repairs. And is
building going to be ready for
    September, 2022.
    Concern Citizen wants to know!

  11. Territory Above Self says:

Seven months ago, a portion of the ceiling of this said school caved in and Wheatley emphasized, that the structure was old and lacked maintenance, I presume, that sums of money were thrown into this black hole as a temporary fix, thank God no one has suffered injury or loss. Maybe one of Nature’s Little Secret local multi millionaires may come to the fore of the territory’s future (YOUTHS)

$7M for airplanes that still cannot be found

        • Google says:

One of them is parked in a desert somewhere in America. The other was sold for parts. They were leased by the non existent airline, NOT BOUGHT so there is nothing for the BVI to find. Google those two guys names and you’ll know who they are. But I digress. If DOS had just googled he would have know who he was dealing with. The BVI never owned a plane, so there’s no plane to find. They belonged to the leasing company. So they are theirs to disposed of as they see fit.

        Don’t forget:
        – $35m overspend on the pier park (still unnaccounted for).
        – $6m to fake fishers and farmers.
        – Matter of fact just include the whole stimulus.
