26-yr-old man charged for sexual relations with a minor

West End Police Station

BVI News understands that a 26-year-old man from Carrot Bay was recently arrested on suspicion of having unlawful sexual intercourse with a girl under the age of 16.

It remains unclear who made the initial report to the police or whether the young girl involved has been referred for social intervention or counselling support from the relevant authorities.

Sources say the police took DNA and fingerprint samples from the suspect, who was reportedly granted bail at a substantial amount. He is allegedly expected to appear before the Magistrate’s Court sometime in November.

Under BVI law, it is an offence for any person to have sexual intercourse with a child under the age of 16. The offence carries a potential prison sentence upon conviction.

This latest arrest follows a few similar incidents in the territory in recent years. In 2021, a 19-year-old resident of Cane Garden Bay was charged with five counts of unlawful sexual intercourse with a girl under sixteen. In a separate case from June 2011, a 27-year-old man was convicted on multiple counts of sex with a girl in her early teens and received a four-year prison sentence.

Across the Caribbean, cases of sexual activity involving minors are widely believed to be underreported, often due to fear, stigma, or pressure within small communities. However, in the BVI, authorities generally act swiftly once such complaints are made, moving to investigate and bring suspects before the court.

The cry for a sex offender registry in these BVI will continue to fall on deaf ears as it has been for donkey years.
The aiding and abetting crime and criminals of all varieties is endemic in the BVI of Nature’s secret as they are routinely imported and installed by the machinations of our local Government
The public identity of the sexual offenders in these (B)VI will never happen. Any and all protection of life and limb by the appropriate Gov sector is understood to be nil..including the air
we breathe and the water that is on occasion
allotted, and the schools..a threat to mind and body of our children.

Calling for a Sex Offenders Registry when sentencing is still an issue is reductive. It appears to me that people would rather know who these people are rather than calling for appropriate punishment to match the level of crime. The lifetime harm that sexual abuses cause its young victims last long into their adult and old age.
