3-year-old drug case ends with guilty verdict

Leshaughn Smith has been convicted of importing 1.4 kilograms of marijuana into the British Virgin Islands.

Senior Magistrate Tamia Richards handed down the guilty verdict last week.

Smith is said to have smuggled the drugs in the territory by shipping it inside a stereo.

The prosecution’s case

The stereo was reportedly imported into the territory in February, three years ago.

The court was told that during a routine inspection of packages on the day in question, employees at the BVI Post Office opened the package containing the stereo.

They noticed that the stereo appeared to have been tampered with.

It is said that wires were hanging out of the stereo and a further inspection revealed that something was inside the appliance.

Post office workers subsequently alerted the police.

When the police arrived, the stereo was discovered to have six ‘cleverly hidden’ packages inside.

Those packages contained marijuana.

Smith was subsequently apprehended and charged.

The offender, who has another high-profile drug case before the court, will return for sentencing.
