A violent last 18 months in the BVI

Statistics from the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) reveal that 2023 recorded the highest number of crimes that resulted in serious harm or death over the past three years. In many instances, 2024 is closely trailing, indicating that the last 18 months have been a particularly violent period in the typically peaceful British Virgin Islands.

In total, there were 115 recorded instances of serious offences such as assault occasioning grievous bodily harm, manslaughter, attempted murder, and murder last year.

Specifically, there were 98 cases of serious assault occasioning grievous bodily harm in 2023, up from 78 in 2022 and 95 in 2021. As of July this year, there have been 54 reported cases.

The previous year also saw a notable increase in attempted murder cases, with 11 recorded instances. This was significantly higher compared to 2020, 2021, and 2022, which had three, one, and four instances respectively. Up to July of this year, there have been five reported unsuccessful murder attempts.

In 2022, the BVI experienced the highest number of murders in the past three years, with seven recorded killings while 2023 had seven. So far in 2024, there have been five murders.

The RVIPF has announced that one person has been arrested and charged for one of the five murders this year, while the others remain under investigation. Additionally, two people have been arrested and charged with attempted murder in 2024, with three cases still under investigation.

As of July 2024, there have been 64 recorded serious crimes resulting in harm or death, including five attempted murders and 54 serious assaults occasioning grievous bodily harm.

The most recent murder occurred in late July in Road Town, where 34-year-old Jareem Todman was shot multiple times and subsequently died.

Tell that to the youths’ parents! It’s not up to the government; parents have to take responsibility for raising their children. They brought childrend into this world, and it’s THEIR responsibility, not the government’s (a/k/a other taxpayers) to bear the financial and emotional costs of raising those children.

to much of our youths are getting hooked on drinking and smoking from a very tender age so their is nothing else left to do… as a elder I stop going out because it’s bad to see young mother and their under age kids liming and drinking at the same place.. some of these mothers even watch their young daughter be trouble by older mehn,,

it saddens me to see some of these young ladies in school clothes living double lives…Kids during the week and adults on the weekend..

  8. Prezzi says:

We need to establish an annual PURGE. Just like in the movie series, only caveat is that prior to this annual event (prior to emancipation festival) the RVIPF disables the criminal elements from having weapons.

This way law-abiding citizens can PURGE without fear of being out-gunned by the organized criminal gangs.

We need out of the box thinking as these traditional law enforcement agencies cannot get a handle on this upward trend.

  9. The Real Donald Trump says:

  12. Data says:

Thank you for sharing stats. We should all be absolutely clear on the statistics. Road deaths should be shared as well so that we can understand just how dangerous the roads can be. In Bermuda every road death is reported as a headline with the number for the year. Every person is aware. By being aware of the risks, people exercise more caution. helmets are worn on bikes and speed restrictions are observed. (Awareness and enforcement)

It is too easy to bury our heads in the sand if we don’t understand the real picture and know just how bad it is.
