AC challenges continue at the hospital
Emergency medical procedures continue as planned in spite of the air conditioning challenges that persist at the Dr D Orlando Smith Hospital.
Despite the difficulties, the BVI Health Services Authority (BVIHSA) said swift measures were implemented to ensure minimal disruption to the hospital’s operations and it assured the community of its unwavering commitment to delivering essential healthcare services without interruption.
To alleviate the discomfort caused by the air conditioning problem, the hospital has increased the use of fans and opened windows to improve air circulation within patient rooms.
The BVIHSA reiterated that elective surgeries have paused momentarily until the air conditioning system is fully functional, though urgent cases are being prioritised.
Other hospital services, including the Road Town Clinic, laboratory, and dialysis services, are unaffected, ensuring continuous access to critical care.
The requisite component to mend the air conditioning system should reach the territory today, Thursday, with a specialised technician set to arrive on Monday. A resolution to the challenge is hoped for by next Wednesday, April 10.
In the interim, the BVIHSA said it is banking on the community’s understanding and patience as it navigates through these trying times.
The Authority said it recognises the vital role of familial support in the healing journey and assured the community that visiting hours remain unchanged.
The BVIHSA apologised for its inability to provide diagnostic services such as CT, MRI and mammograms but expressed that it remains dedicated to providing exceptional care. Officials confirmed that the Imaging Unit is on a limited schedule, offering X-ray and ultrasound services between 9 am and 2 pm.
